Beat the Winter Blues With a New Backyard Oasis

With the holidays behind us, these first few months of the year can be rough. For most of us, the “winter blues” are temporary, and they will fade as winter thaws into spring. If you feel stuck in a rut and would like to take on a more active role in jump-starting your mood, consider a few pro tips.

Winter Blues

With the holidays behind us, these first few months of the year can be rough. Colder weather means more time spent indoors (especially here in the northern latitudes), and shorter days put sunlight in short supply. You may even find yourself leaving for work or school in the dark and heading home after sunset.

In a few weeks the holiday bills will be rolling in, and most of us will have given up on the resolutions we made for the new year. Who wouldn’t be bummed out?

For most of us, the “winter blues” are temporary, and they will fade as winter thaws into spring. If you feel stuck in a rut and would like to take on a more active role in jump-starting your mood, consider a few pro tips.

Boost Your Mood With Food

Did you know that low vitamin D levels can increase your risk of feeling down? To head this off, make sure your diet includes plenty of vitamin D-fortified foods: fish, milk, orange juice, yogurt, you get the picture.

Keep Up the Sleep

Sleep has a huge impact on mood. A lack of adequate, regular sleep not only leaves you dragging in the late afternoon, it can disrupt circadian- and cortisol rhythms and interrupt hormone production. Make an extra effort to go to bed/wake up at the same time and limit your use of electronics immediately before bedtime.

Work it Out

Physical activity is a proven way to decrease the symptoms of depression and reduce stress. Whether you try some light stretching/yoga, strenuous aerobic exercise, or something in between, getting off the couch and moving for at least 20 minutes a day will make a difference in your mood and may even target the specific symptoms related to a lack of daylight.

But Most of All...

Get outside! One of the main causes of the winter blues is a lack of exposure to sunlight. Natural light helps balance levels of serotonin (the feel-good neurotransmitter), increases melatonin production, and even helps offset a lack of vitamin D.

Heading outside in the winter can be a challenge. If you live in a colder climate and want to soak up some sun, Highwood can help you create a new backyard oasis to make things more inviting.

Get in Hot Water

Highwood’s Spa/Hot Tub Cabinet Replacement Kit has everything you need to revitalize your faded (or otherwise unattractive) spa cabinet. Highwood’s high-grade poly material is made of 100% recycled plastics, bringing the look of real wood without ever requiring sanding, staining, or painting.

Winter Blues... Federal Blues

Sometimes you just need to embrace the blues. Highwood offers a range of product options in Federal Blue, a deep, classy hue that dresses up any outdoor sitting area. Check out our Italica Modern Adirondack Chairs, with bold, oversized back slats that put a contemporary spin on the classic Adirondack chair.

If you prefer the traditional look, try our Classic Westport Adirondack Chairs. The Hamilton Folding and Reclining Adirondack Chairs, meanwhile, give you the option of stretching out in the sunlight—even if you do opt for a blanket to supplement the winter warmth.

Nantucket Blue

Bringing to mind the ocean surrounding this fabled island, our Nantucket Blue is an eye-catching, cheerful shade that’s perfect for lifting your spirits. Choose Nantucket blue in the Highwood Weatherly Garden Chair (available individually or as a set of two) to make your garden a welcoming winter haven. And while we’re looking for warmth, don’t forget that the Classic Westport Adirondack Fireside Set is available in this and other colors to create a cozy fire pit spot that will draw you outside time after time.

Awaken Your Outdoor Space With a Pergola

Pergolas are a perfect way to add partial coverage and define your outdoor seating area. Highwood’s Bodhi, with its open design, provides natural shade and will withstand even the harshest climates. Available in 8x8, 10x10, 10x12, and 12x12 versions, you can even choose to add a single (or pair of) Weatherly or Lehigh swings.
