Welcome the Neighborhood to Fall with Your Front Porch Décor
The leaves are changing colors, the days are getting shorter, and there is a chill in the air. Let your neighbors know that fall really is upon us by creating a warm and cozy vibe on your front porch that is welcoming to all. With only a bit of effort and a touch of creativity, your house can let people know it’s time to shift into different activities, different clothing, and a different state of mind.
Fall is one of the best times to decorate your front porch; there is so much to choose from! From changing leaves to Halloween to decorative vegetables, you can create a vibe that is both personal and fun.
Fall Colors a Treat
Fall means color. Take a tip from the changing leaves and think in terms of oranges, reds, browns, and purples. Start with highwood® pieces ranging from rocking chairs, shutters and porch swings to planters and side tables. Order product color swatches to take a look. Rustic red mimics the brightest of maple reds; Weathered Acorn is a deep brown that creates a stunning background for a pumpkin or fall flower arrangement and Whitewash or our Coastal Teak are perfect accents to everything else around them.
Plentiful Decorations
Next, turn to the decorations themselves, and remember—your display can change and evolve throughout October and early November. Start with fall vegetables like squashes and gourds in their own hues of orange, yellow and light beige with a touch of green. Keep your pumpkins whole at the beginning, and arrange them with dried leaves, corn stalks, and fall mums. Highwood® Side tables and planters, as well as your stairs and porch railings, make a perfect foundation.
Later in the month, it’s time to go full-on Halloween! Carve both frightening and happy faces, or symbols and letters like the first letter of your family name. Then adorn your porch with spider webbing and even Halloween-colored lighting strings in orange and black.
Mums the Word
Chrysanthemums (Mums for short) bloom through much of the fall in bright and varied colors—just the thing to top off a highwood® Beckett, Barrow or other planter. Or, they can be arranged in a highwood® window box, such as the Becket, which comes in 3-, 4- or 5-foot lengths. Mums also look great in a metal bucket, wooden box, or anything else that can serve as a planter. They’re hearty enough to endure a mild frost, but after the first heavy frost, surround the plants with mulch. Depending on your climate, they might even last until spring!
Swinging and Rocking
There is nothing like bundling up under your favorite fall blanket and sitting outside in your porch swing, like our Classic Westport Porch Swing, or the straight and elegant Weatherly Porch Swing in 4- or 5-foot lengths.
If you’re a bibliophile, you can bundle up and read on sunny fall days in our new Hamilton Rocking Chair, which balances the look of the classic Adirondack chair with total comfort and is just the place to sip hot cider and wave at the neighbors in between chapters.
Keep What You Need Handy
Once you’re bundled up, the last thing you want to do is get up and go back inside; be sure to have a highwood® side table at the ready for the essentials, such as your book, cider pitcher, reading glasses, hat and gloves, or tissues. You can get a table to match your swing or rocking chair, or use our Essential Folding Side Table, which easily folds to store in your garage when the season is done.
Let Your Shutters Match Your Décor
Finally, just before you’re ready to start showing off your porch, take a good look at your shutters. Consider painting them to match your display—maybe a deep fall hue such as red or orange to make a colorful statement, or a design of your own making, using several colors to match the other pieces in your porch decorations. After all, the world is your palette!
Fall is Fleeting
There is only one thing for sure about fall and its delights: it never lasts as long as we want it to. So, start now to create an inviting fall front porch that you can call your own!
